Events: Black History Month
Black History Month in 2009 proved to be a success! Children had the opportunity to “Go round the world in 60 mins” discovering new authors, books, people, cultures and countries.
Black History Month 2009
Highlight of the month - Mohammed Ali Hussain (Beech Hill Primary, Year 5) impressed us with his “I De Rap Guy” written by Benjamin Zephaniah (Funky Chickens). See his picture on the right.
Children enjoyed the sessions:
“I learnt that Martin Luther King Jr was a politician and a minister of a church. I enjoy Black History Month because I like to learn new History – Zion, Ferrars Junior School”.
“ I learnt that Martin Luther King Jr was a church minister and he was a politician and he also had a friend called Ben. Doing the questions was fun and challenging” – Abraham, Ferrars Junior School.
“It was lovely to see the children engaged in the activities. They learnt many things they didn’t know and it made them think about other cultures. The sessions were organised and well thought out and they ran smoothly. The children enjoyed the sessions and the resources were wonderful” – Denise, Learning Mentor, Ferrars Junior School.
“This
was a very eventful week for the children as there were a variety of activities
organised by the library service to celebrate Black History Month. The children
received a rich and cultural experience of Black History. In year 3, children
wrote about Black History for their homework in their Learning Logs. The
children in the school were inspired by the important
figures in the black community”.
